All Karioi Project traps in the field should be treated as set. Do not attempt to set/unset any trap unless you have been trained and are confident.

  • Any injury from a trap, requiring third-party treatment, should be reported to the Karioi Project staff.

  • Traps should be regularly maintained. Remove mould, fur and bits of dead animals, and check for worn pivots, and weakened springs.

  • Replace any worn-out rat traps and bring back any broken/dysfunctional traps (stoat/possum) to the volunteer coordinator.

Volunteers will undergo an induction and get face-to-face training before they are required to set traps independently.
