Born to be wild
Somewhere along the way, between scraped knees, salty hair, and the curiosity that never quite left us, we became conservationists.
When we dig a little deeper, many of us realise this life is something we were born to do. Early memories remind us of climbing trees and building huts, playing knee-deep in estuarine mud, proudly bringing crabs or frogs to school for show-and-tell, catching tuna (eels) in a local stream, or rock pooling for hidden creatures. We remember gardening with whānau, calling out to pīwakawaka in roadside bush, rescuing injured animals, and wondering where the birds disappeared to at night.
Those moments of enchantment become seeds of passion. And from that love of nature, kaitiakitanga grows.
That’s why we’ve developed a range of nature-based education programmes throughout the year - in school, after school, out in the elements - to help kids explore these incredible wild places right in their own backyard. From the forest to the mountain, from local streams to our rugged wild west coastline, we learn by doing, playing, noticing, and caring.
This summer, we’re excited to bring that same magic into a fun-filled environmental holiday programme for local kids and visitors alike.
Check out our programme… and let your tamariki connect with their wild side!
