Predator control

On and around Karioi, and the ōi habitat

As well as managing landscape-scale stoat control on over 3000 hectares – with more than 100 km of trapping lines – we are also extending and intensifying predator control for rats, possums and feral cats within this network as funding allows. We currently have over 3,000 traps deployed across Karioi and 700 hectares of bait stations.

None of this would be possible without our amazing partners and volunteers. Over 25% of the Raglan community supports the Karioi Project in some way, with well over 100 regular volunteers checking and maintaining our trap lines every week equating to over 6,000 hrs of volunteer effort each year. Backyard Hub, and Backyard Hub Plus+

As a significant proportion of Karioi and adjacent coastline and surrounding farmland is privately owned. Active and willing landowner participation is vital to providing effective predator control. We aim to work with all willing landowners around Karioi and the Whāingaroa community through Karioi’s “Backyard Hub” Programme. We even have a trap library that provides traps for a very low cost to keen backyard trappers!

This program is strongly aligned with the Predator Free 2050 vision for New Zealand. For landowners and families who want to participate, we can provide advice and training free of charge, along with subsidised traps.

For busy, or absent landowners, we also offer a paid trapping service through our social enterprise - the BACKYARD HUB plus!

In collaboration with schools

We love school visits! We support schools that are interested in establishing predator control on their grounds. We're working with most local schools, empowering students to protect the place where they learn and play. We can also provide environmental education and fun, adventurous experiences for young and old, in and out of the classroom.
