Dynamic Duo: Phil and Jilliene
Affectionately nicknamed "Philiene," this legendary volunteer duo is always ready to lend a hand.
When they're not out exploring the coastline by sea kayak, you'll often find them checking predator traps along the coast. And while they're out there, they don't stop at trapping. If they come across invasive weeds, they tackle those too, making the most of every trip and doubling their impact for the environment.
For Phil and Jilliene, it's simply common sense. They're already there, so why not leave the place a little better than they found it?
Asked whether age ever gets in the way of volunteering, their answer is immediate: “Not even close!”
As great-grandparents, they prove that conservation isn't about age—it's about caring enough to get involved.
Volunteers like Phil and Jilliene quietly make a real difference to the health of our local environment. Their generosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to pitch in wherever they're needed inspire everyone around them.
And, as anyone who's shared a coffee with them will tell you, they're an absolute delight to spend time with.
During Conservation Week, we're celebrating volunteers like Phil and Jilliene—and saying a heartfelt thank you for everything they do.
This story is just one example of the impact our volunteers have. We're grateful to COGS Waikato West for supporting initiatives that help keep our volunteer community thriving.
