Lenny's Journey
with the Karioi Project
From Junior Ranger to Bush Warrior
Growing up in Whāingaroa, Lenny Reynolds' connection with the Karioi Project began early. As a child, he participated in the inaugural Karioi Rangers education programme, sparking a lifelong passion for conservation. This early involvement laid the foundation for his future endeavours in environmental stewardship.
During his teenage years, Lenny deepened his engagement through the Manaaki Ao (Earthcare) programme, a collaboration between the Karioi Project and Raglan Area School. This initiative allowed him to explore his curiosity about native ecosystems and develop practical conservation skills. He adopted a trapline, diligently checking for predators like rats and stoats, and contributed to various educational programmes, including the Karioi Kids and Rangers after-school sessions.
While pursuing a degree in ecology and biodiversity at the University of Waikato, Lenny balanced his academic commitments with hands-on conservation work. He served as a part-time ranger for the Karioi Project, engaging in activities ranging from pest control to environmental education. His role involved not only fieldwork but also mentoring young students, teaching them about biodiversity and biosecurity through school projects and holiday programmes.
Reflecting on his journey, Lenny acknowledges the profound impact of the Karioi Project on his personal and professional growth. The experiences and skills he gained have solidified his commitment to environmental conservation. Now, having completed his studies, Lenny has moved to Australia to further his professional and academic pursuits, carrying with him the knowledge and passion cultivated during his time with the Karioi Project.
With Lenny’s true sense of humour, he has shared one of his memorable moments with us - A Day in the Life of the Kareao Cutters!
